How to Use the Desmos Graphing Calculator (Must Learn to Give SAT)
Notes
Key points
- Type the equation as written; click the gray points for intercepts, vertex and intersections.
- Systems: graph both equations — the intersection point is the solution.
- Equation in x only? Desmos draws a vertical line at each solution.
- Unknown constant ? Type it as a letter, add a slider, drag until it fits.
- Table of data: add a table, then type for the regression.
- Exponential fit: . Desmos returns and .
- Equivalent expressions: graph both — identical curves mean equivalent.
Common traps
- Typing 1/2x puts x in the denominator — press → after the 2.
- Calling it “no solution” before zooming out: the intersection may be off-screen.
- Choosing a rounded decimal from the graph when the choices are exact fractions or radicals.
SAT tip
Systems, roots, vertex, number of solutions: graph first. Desmos usually beats the algebra in under 30 seconds.
