Circles in the xy-Plane

Notes

Key points

  • Circle: (x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=r^2, centre (h,k)(h,k), radius rr.
  • Signs flip: (x+3)2(x+3)^2 means h=−3h=-3.
  • The right side is r2r^2, not rr — take the square root.
  • Expanded form? Complete the square on xx and on yy separately.
  • A point is on the circle if it satisfies the equation exactly; inside if LHS < r².
  • Tangent line ⟂ radius at the point of contact.

Formulas

Standard form(x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=r^2
Completing the squarex2+bx=(x+b2)2−(b2)2x^2+bx=\left(x+\tfrac{b}{2}\right)^2-\left(\tfrac{b}{2}\right)^2
Distance between pointsd=(x2−x1)2+(y2−y1)2d=\sqrt{(x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2}
Midpoint (centre from a diameter)(x1+x22, y1+y22)\left(\dfrac{x_1+x_2}{2},\ \dfrac{y_1+y_2}{2}\right)

Common traps

  • Reading r2=16r^2=16 as radius 16 instead of 4.
  • Keeping the sign: (x−5)2(x-5)^2 is centre x=5x=5, not −5-5.
  • Forgetting to add the completed-square constants to the other side.

SAT tip

On Desmos, type the equation and click the centre — it reads off the coordinates and radius for you.
