Notes

Key points

  • Equivalent expressions: expand, factor or combine — or test one value in both.
  • Rational equations: multiply by the LCD; reject any value that zeros a denominator.
  • Radical equations: isolate the root, square both sides, then check every answer.
  • Zero at x=ax=a ⇔ factor (x−a)(x-a) ⇔ p(a)=0p(a)=0.
  • Remainder of p(x)÷(x−a)p(x)\div(x-a) is just p(a)p(a).
  • Match coefficients: if ax2+bx+c≡3x2+5x−2ax^2+bx+c\equiv 3x^2+5x-2, then a=3a=3, b=5b=5, c=−2c=-2.

Formulas

Difference of squaresa2−b2=(a+b)(a−b)a^2-b^2=(a+b)(a-b)
Factor theoremp(a)=0  ⟺  (x−a) is a factor of p(x)p(a)=0\iff(x-a)\ \text{is a factor of}\ p(x)
Remainder theoremp(x)=(x−a)q(x)+p(a)p(x)=(x-a)q(x)+p(a)
Adding fractionsab+cd=ad+bcbd\dfrac{a}{b}+\dfrac{c}{d}=\dfrac{ad+bc}{bd}
Square rootx2=∣x∣\sqrt{x^2}=|x|

Common traps

  • Keeping an extraneous root after squaring — plug it back in.
  • Cancelling terms, not factors: x+63≠x+2\dfrac{x+6}{3}\neq x+2.
  • Squaring a sum: (x+1)2=x+2x+1(\sqrt{x}+1)^2=x+2\sqrt{x}+1, not x+1x+1.

SAT tip

Equivalent-expression question: plug x = 2 into the original and every choice. If two match, try x = 3.
