Quadratic Graphs

Notes

Key points

  • a>0a>0 opens up (minimum); a<0a<0 opens down (maximum).
  • Vertex form y=a(x−h)2+ky=a(x-h)^2+k: vertex (h,k)(h,k); the sign flips on hh only.
  • Factored form y=a(x−p)(x−q)y=a(x-p)(x-q): x-intercepts pp and qq.
  • Standard form y=ax2+bx+cy=ax^2+bx+c: y-intercept is (0,c)(0,c).
  • Axis of symmetry runs through the vertex, halfway between the x-intercepts.
  • Larger ∣a∣|a| = narrower parabola.
  • “Which form displays…” questions: pick the form where that feature is a visible constant.

Common traps

  • Reading y=(x+3)2−5y=(x+3)^2-5 as vertex (3,−5)(3,-5); it is (−3,−5)(-3,-5).
  • Factored-form signs: (x−4)(x-4) gives the intercept x=4x=4, not −4-4.
  • Giving the vertex x-value when the question asks for the minimum value.

SAT tip

Graph it in Desmos and click the vertex and intercepts. Save algebra for “which form shows” questions.
